Forests are just as important for our survival as they are for the survival of the planet.

Help us with this!

To avert a climate catastrophe, it is essential to stop the destruction of the world’s last remaining rainforests, including the Leuser ecosystem in Indonesia. The Leuser ecosystem, which stores enormous amounts of carbon in its forests and peat bogs, is characterised by one of the world’s highest biodiversity densities.

Large companies – including globally recognised brands and banks – are major contributors to the destruction of these vital rainforests, including the Leuser ecosystem. Millions of hectares of rainforest continue to fall victim to deforestation in order to extract raw materials such as palm oil, which is used cheaply in packaged foods.

Why are rainforests so important?

Rainforests harbour an incredible diversity of species – from jaguars and gorillas to elephants and orangutans – and are home to animal species that are unique to our planet. They are vital for purifying the air we breathe and the water we drink. They also provide livelihoods, food, shelter and medicine for millions of people. The rainforests are our most effective defence against the climate crisis by storing enormous amounts of carbon in their trees and the soil to which they belong.

The largest remaining tropical forests in the world are found in Indonesia, the Amazon and the Congo Basin. These tropical forests form complex ecosystems with dense tree canopies and lush peat bogs that have been preserved for generations and are home to a breathtaking diversity of plants, animals – and people!
